Range
What range will you actually get?
The official figure is a laboratory result at a moderate temperature. Two things break it on a real journey: sustained speed and cold.
Why speed costs so much
At urban speeds most of your energy goes into accelerating mass, and regenerative braking gets a good share of it back. On a motorway almost none of it does — you are pushing air out of the way continuously, and that cost scales with the square of your speed while the power required scales with the cube.
The practical consequence is that the difference between 110 and 130 km/h is much larger than the 18% speed difference suggests. On a long drive, dropping 20 km/h frequently saves a charging stop, which saves more time than it costs.
Speed and consumption
The winter penalty
Two effects compound. The cabin needs heating, and in a car with resistive heating that draws directly from the traction battery. And the pack itself accepts and delivers energy less readily when cold, which also slows rapid charging. Studies measuring ambient temperature effects on consumption quantify the combined result [1].
| Conditions | Plan on | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Urban, mild | 100% or better | Regeneration works in your favour |
| Mixed roads, mild | ~85% | Close to the official cycle |
| Motorway 110 km/h, mild | ~75% | Drag dominates |
| Motorway 130 km/h, mild | ~65% | The cubic power relationship bites |
| Motorway, near freezing | ~50-60% | Heating plus a cold pack |
| Towing or roof box | Much less | Frontal area is the enemy |
Common questions
How much range do I lose in winter?
Should I slow down?
Does a roof box matter?
Why is my consumption worse than reviews?
